The Unifying Principles of Islamic Architecture : Ihtiram

Architecture of Ihtiram : Respect

Respect means propriety or adab (good manners),  a positive feeling of esteem or deference for a person or other entity, and also specific actions and conduct representative of that esteem. In Islam, respect is translated in ihtiram in a sense of showing respect or behaving in a good manner towards God, Allah; to fellow man kind and to oneself. Respect is usually both given and received, and as a guideline to Muslims, it is essential to follow the 5 pillars of Islam that consists of shahada, salat, zakat, fasting and hajj that practice of good manners.

Respect cannot be measured as a quantity, cannot be bought or traded; but it has to be earned and built over time in the inner and outer spiritual fulfillment that helps to purify oneself to  that of Allah. The prophet Nabi Muhammad was a perfect figure of respect and the Al-Quran is a guide for virtue and attitude of good manners. It is important to practice this self conscious acts as it was quoted "The best of you are those who possess the best of manners."

In forms of architecture, it illustrates symbolism, harmony and the purity of geometric shapes of the Ka'bah which are found in sacred architecture throughout the Islamic world.
